Christine writes the following about Speak :
This book is a very interesting book about a girl, Melinda Sordino, that is a living social outcast. No one will talk to her and she can trust no one. The only place that she feels safe is the art room where she is assigned a project that she must create artwork for (her item is a tree). The only other place is a closet. This closet is the place that she goes when she feels that she doesn't fit in anywhere else which is practically every day.
Melinda wasn't always a social outcast. She was actually very popular until she went to a party that went a little too far. She was raped by Andy Evans (a popular senior) and called the police when he finally let her up. The police came, and arrested many people including one of her friends brothers.
Since nobody knows the story of Melinda Sordino they avoid her and no one at all talks to her until one day she is going into her closet and Andy Evans pushes her into it and follows her in. He locks the door and starts to attack Melinda once again. She fights and fights and finally she gets out. Andy follows her and the next thing Melinda knows she is facing face to face with Rachel (her ex-best friend) and the rest of her team. Melinda tells Rachel and Rachel practically ruins his reputation.
