Squiz writes the following about The Transall Saga :
The Transall saga is probably one the best novels that I have ever read. The story circulates largely around a boy called Mark Harrison, who loves to hike. He was given a week to cross a mighty canyon, and while gazing at the stars from the safety and comfort of his sleeping bag, Mark sees an object blaze across the night sky before fizzling out somewhere nearby. Taking his torch and camera he finds the tube of light. After snapping pictures of it, Mark holds out his hand to see if the tube generates warmth, but too late, he hears the rattle and feels the snake strike, he leaps backward, unknowingly throwing himself into the depths of the light?
When he awakens Mark finds himself in a strange world, where he must learn to survive. After finding a tribe of natives, Mark begins to feel the joy of human bonds on this foreign planet. But when a more powerful tribe known as the Tsook raids the village where he resides, Mark is plunged into the violent world hidden behind the strange yet pleasant exterior of his new home. Time passes and Mark learns to speak Tsook, and becomes known as Kakon (Which roughly translates to ?The second Warrior) but remains a slave to the tribe?s leader Dagon, and his ignorant daughter, Megaan. When an escape attempt from Mark turns into what would later save the village from a horrifying force called the Rawhaz, Mark makes many difficult decisions that will prove to many where his loyalties truly lie. Finally he is accepted into their lives and becomes a warrior of the Tsook. At his initiation celebration, a strange man known as the leader of the Tsook, the Merkon comes to see this amazing warrior who claims to be from another place. When Megann?s grandmother tells the Merkon of the light which Mark talked of, the Merkon claims to know a shaman in a place far from the village known as Trisad. However before he leaves Megaan?s younger brother Barow, gives Mark a gift. When he unwraps it he finds a piece of glass with the words ?PRODUCT OF THE COCA-COLA COMPANY? imprinted on the bottom. Other villagers ?on request- give Mark items such as a doorhandle with ?Made in Japan? on it, and a perfect half of a white glass bowl with the word ?Pyrex? on it. More determined than ever to find the shaman and the way to the light, knowing that he is now in the future, Mark embarks on a journey with the strange Merkon and his mentor and companion, Sarbo. They are attacked by someone who seems to be the Rawhaz on the way there, But Mark and Sarbo are suspicious, for planned attacks are not the Rawhaz?s style, and the arrows left behind by their attackers are poorly crafted, and this to is not like the Rawhaz because they take pride in their weapon-making. After discovering that the Merkon has been kidnapped, Sarbo and Mark continue their journey to Trisad alone. When nearing their destination, Mark and Sarbo are ambushed yet again, this time by the sworn enemies of the Tsook, the Samatin. The Samatin refuse to enter Trisad to pursue their targets, due to the fact that it used to be holy ground for them, Mark and Sarbo make temporary residence in the household of Sarbo?s old friend, a person known as the Short Man. One quiet night, Yonk awakes Mark, and tells him of the Short Man?s dastardly plot to kidnap Mark and hand him in as nothing more than a wanted man, to collect his reward from the Merkon. Sarbo overhears the whole thing and together, Mark and Sarbo force information from the Short Man but not before seeing an old man called Pet who speaks of the before time and what he calls ?the blood sick? which is what changed earth into Transall. Finally Mark and Sarbo depart Trisad, with Yonk in tow. Heading for a new destination ? Listra where they intended to go to his stronghold across the river in Listra and ask questions. However their plans are interrupted once again, by the Samatin. This time Sarbo receives an arrow in his side, refusing to leave him, Mark, Sarbo and Yonk are captured by the Samatin and taken to their village. On escaping Yonk and Sarbo head back to the Tsook village so Sarbo can die in peace. Mark carries on to Listra alone. While waiting for the ferry at the river, Mark befriends a man named Roan and a group of unruly murderers and thieves. The group finds a way to get Mark into the stronghold. When inside Mark discovers that the Merkon also came through the light in a desert after escaping a prison detail in Arizona in the 1980's. After a deadly swordfight, the Merkon is left with fatal wounds, sealing his fate to die the slow painful death he deserves, Mark, Roan and company flee the stronghold, and returned to their camp. The next morning however the Merkon's son, Mordo (Who is even more ruthless than his father) and his men go searching for Mark. Mark bids farewell to Roan and his friends. He arrives back at the village, to find everything as he left it. He is even more happy to find that Sarbo is still alive. Arrangements for him to marry Megaan are in place, and things could not be better. On a hunting trip to gather food Roan and his companion Francle find him and give him terrible news; All of the others are dead at Mordo's hands. Mordo has sworn revenge and he and his fathers army are on their way to find Mark and kill him. Mark realises that he has put his village in danger. He goes back temporarily to warn them. On doing so, Mordo's men come and Mark lures them away from the village. Managing to camp near them one night Mark removes the bridles from their beasts, leaving them unable to ride. He then releases his own beast, sending it back to the village. He returns to the jungle where he had spent his first few months learning to survive. Finally he stands and fights and gets an arrow in the arm. Hiding behind a boulder, he fells lightning strike just in front of him and then, feels himself falling, a sensation he had not felt in 4 years...
TWENTY YEARS LATER...
Mark is a doctor and some of his co-workers are going on a hike in the desert, the decide to invite him but one of them is hesitant.
"He'll be fine." the person laughs "It's just a hike in the desert. What could happen?"
