Objectives :

Materials :

  • James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
  • Music: Cinematic Orchestra 'Burn Out'

Introductory Questions :

  • How would the body react if confined to a small space?
  • How would your body react as the space increased in size?

Introductory Activity :

Read James and the Giant Peach, pages

Warm up: Walk on the spot, leading to travelling in the space using flexible pathways. When teacher calls 'Home', return to starting space. Include skipping, side-stepping, jogging. Procede to ways of travelling across the floor (rolling, creepng, wiggling, etc)
Follow with sitting stretching. Legs pinned to the floor, brush the legs with the hands, then stretch up, arms high. Take weight in right hand and rock to the right; rpt to the left, then roll to the right. Reverse.

Body :

Introduce idea of journey into tunnel. Sit and feel the shape of the tunnel. Use hands, feet, elbows, etc. How would the body react if the tunnel was very small and narrow/large and wide?

Display key words; creep, wriggle, roll, crawl, squeeze, slide, etc. Explore travelling along the tunnel, showing shape and dimensions by shape and manner of travel.


Task1: Create a travelling sequence through three different sized sections of the tunnel as it becomes gradually larger and wider.

Task2: Show a partner ? can they determine when the size of the tunnel changes each time?

Conclusion Activity :

Slowly repeat the sitting, stretching and rocking exercise.

Evaluation Activity :

Observe children as they perform to each other. Discuss, as a class, how they could tell when their partners' tunnel widened - how did their bodies react?
