Themes or Keywords : Police Officers

Objectives :

Children will recognize the roles of police officers in the community

Materials :

  • Book "Officer Buckle & Gloria" by Peggy Rathmann
  • Blue Paint
  • Police Uniform

Introductory Questions :

  • What does a Police Officer do?
  • Who can be a police officer?
  • Is there any animals that help police officers?

Introductory Activity :

Read the story "Officer Buckle and Gloria". Discuss with the children the unsafe things that people were doing. Also discuss why people thought Officer Buckle was more fun when Gloria was with him.
Discuss other things that police officers do for the community

Body :

Use blue paint and sponges cut into the shape of a star to complete a process art activity with the children. Exlpain to the children that they are using stars because often police officer badges have a star shape on them.

Conclusion Activity :

Visit a police station. Or if that is not possible call the local police station and have an officer visit the class. Ask the officer to talk about safety rules such as not talking to strangers and when it is okay to dial 911.

Vocabulary Words :

  • Officer
  • Uniform
  • Badge

Evaluation Activity :

Ask the preschooler a dictation question such as
"Please tell me what you know about Police Officers" or
"What was your favorite part about visiting the police station?"
Remember when writing dictation for preschool it is most important to respect their words and write them exactly as they say them. Not doing so would confuse them when you read back to them what they have said.
