Themes or Keywords : Using an Electronic Thesaurus, Pre-reading Vocabulary, Introducing New Words for a Story

Objectives :

Students will be able to become familiar with new words in a reading selection by using context clues and an electronic Thesaurus.

Materials :

  • Story from Reading Textbook
  • Microsoft Word or other Word Processor with Electronic Thesaurus
  • list of unfamiliar or difficult words from story

Introductory Questions :

  • Who knows the fastest way to find another word for a word?

Introductory Activity :


1. Write the title and page of the story on the board.

2. Under the title on the board, make two columns.
3. Label the first column "Vocabulary Words" and the second column
"Page #".
4. Write the difficult words from story in the first column.
5. Leave the Page # column blank.
6. Introduce the story. Tell the students that before they read the story,
they will be having a word hunt.
7. Each student should have their books opened to the assigned story.
8. Students should take their vocabulary notebook out and write the title
of story on a page in their notebooks. They should fold this page in
9. Then, label the first half "Vocabulary Words."
10. The second column should be labeled "Page #"
(This model should be on the board. )
11. Review each word with the students by having them say each word,
spell each word, then write each word on their papers in the
appropriate column.
12. Ask the students to find the first word in the story. The first student
that finds the word will read the sentence they found the word in
and go to the board and record the page number. (Give them the
"very good" reward)






Body :

Students will continue completing their vocabulary activity in their notebooks on their own.

As the students complete their vocabulary activity in their notebooks, they will go to the computer and open up Microsoft Word ( or other word processor) and follow the steps below:

1. Open Microsoft Word

2. Go to ?View? and click on ?Header & Footer?
3. Type Your Name , Date and Title of Story

4. Click ?Close? for Header and Footer.

5. Go to ?Format? and click ?Columns? then click two and then?OK?

6. In the first column, type all of the vocabulary words.

7. Highlight the vocabulary words in the first column.

8. With all of the vocabulary words highlighted, go to ?Edit? and
click ?copy.?

9. Hit the space bar until you reach the top of the next column.

10. Click ?Edit?, then click ?Paste.?

11. You should have two columns with the same words.

12. Highlight the first word in the 2nd column.

13. With the first word in the 2nd column highlighted, click ?Tools,? and select
the ?Thesaurus?

14. When the window opens, look for the list of synonyms and select the
word that best fits the sentence found in the story, click ?insert?

15. Follow these procedures for the rest of the vocabulary words.

Conclusion Activity :

Class will read the story with the teacher.

Vocabulary Words :

  • take the list of vocabulary words from the story

Evaluation Activity :

After the story has been read, the students will go over the vocabulary words with the teacher and check to see if they selected the appropriate synonym for the word based on the context of the story.
