Objectives :

To engage children in a hands on learning experience - perhaps culminating the end of a unit on apples. May also be a great fall activity for a bright bulleting board or window display.

Materials :

  • regular white glue
  • water
  • paint brushes
  • waxed paper
  • permanent marker
  • red tissue / lime green tissue/ brown tissue
  • candle glitter/ or very fine sprinkle on glitter

Introductory Questions :

  • Who has ever bitten into a ripe red juicy apple?
  • Has anyone ever seen any other type of apples?

Introductory Activity :

Read a book about apples.

Body :

Before your class comes together there is some pre-preparation... on waxed paper outine the shape of apples with a permanent marker... about 8x8. Cut tissue paper into squares 1" size (the green, red and brown). Mix glue and water to a ratio of half/half.

Push all desks together into groups of 4-6. Cover with garbage bags.
Give each child a paint brush and a piece of waxed paper with outline. Ask them to wet their waxed paper with glue mixture first and then layer with tissue paper. 2-3 layers of tissue. The final layer of tissue must be wet (very important for drying procedure) sprinkle with glitter!
