Themes or Keywords : Creative Writing, Writing and Reading Integration

Objectives :

Students have fun by creatively writing about a song character.

Materials :

  • Music CD - Dr. Jean's Silly Songs
  • CD Player
  • Notebook Paper
  • Crayons
  • Pencil

Introductory Questions :

  • What does it mean to have a heart of gold?
  • If I person does not fit into a specific stereotype - do you not speak to them?

Introductory Activity :

Students will enjoy listening to the song about Katalina Matalina Upsidina Walkadina Hoca Poca Loca. The kids will fall in love with this character and beg you to listen to it more!

Body :

After listening to the song about Katalina Matalina, students will create a web of all the things that describe Katalina Matalina (neck as long as a 10 foot pole, head shaped like a baseball bat, one purple eye and one red eye, heart of gold, etc.).

Encourage students to discuss feelings of other people who are treated as an outcast. Sometimes a person is kind but we don't give them a chance because of their physical appearance.

After creating a web, students will write a story about meeting Katalina Matalina in a familiar place. What was your first reaction of her? Were you alone? Did you ignore her at first? How did you find out that she "had a heart of gold"?

Example:
One day I was walking down the sidewalk from school and I met a lady walking on the same side of the street. She looked very scary, so I crossed to the other side of the street. The next day I met the same lady in the super market and went down the next aisle....

Conclusion Activity :

Have students draw a cover page for their story. Each student will draw their version of Katalina Matalina.

Vocabulary Words :

  • expressions
  • Writing process

Evaluation Activity :

Create a rubric for grading student work.
