Objectives :

Children will be able to:
1. know the life cycle of a butterfly.
2. know the days of the week in its sequence.
3. match the word to the life cycle with help.




Materials :

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
  • Caterpillar (Life or Stuffed toys)
  • 2 medium sized boxes
  • leaf and butterfly's egg
  • Caterpillar
  • pupa, butterfly, Monday - Sunday, apple, pears, plums,
  • strawberries, oranges, salami, lollipop, cherry pie,
  • sausage, cupcake, watermelon.

Introductory Questions :

  • Teacher ask children if they have seen an insect, when children say yes, ask them to try to name the insect they have seen.
  • when they mentioned butterfly, ask them where does butterfly comes from?

Introductory Activity :

Tune-in by singing 'There's a tiny caterpillar' song (sang to the tune of 'she'll be coming round the mountain here she comes')

Body :

1.Teacher shows children the big book and introduced the cover page. Ask the children what is the creepy crawly shown on the cover page. What is the caterpillar doing?

2. Introduce the title page and author.

3. Read through the book and continue till ' on Wednesday' and pause at 'still' to signal to the children for anticipation.

4. Teacher proceeds with the reading, till 'on Thursday' and then pause at 'was', again to signal to the children for anticipation. Then pause at 'he' and continue the reading as per normal. By now, children could have already noticed the repeated phrase and might want to say it with teacher as teacher reads along.

5. After 'Friday' ask children - 'What do you think it will do on the next day.' Wait for children to answer then prompt again with "and what day will that be, after Friday?"

6. "Do you know why he had a stomachache?"

7. At the 'cocoon' page, ask children to predict what happen to the caterpillar?

Teacher continues reading till the end.

After reading, teacher stimulates children's thinking with questions like - What if it does not turn into a butterfly?
What if it turned into a butterfly, but cannot fly?
How do you think the caterpillar feels when it is in the
cocoon?.

Activity:

a) Select the picture of a butterfly's life cycle with its
label. Put it into two boxes for pictures and labels respectively. Reinforce their understandings by asking one child at a time to pick up a picture ask what he has picked, show it to the rest of the class to confirm. Teacher check with the rest, if correct, ask the child to paste it on the board. If otherwise, give the child a second try.

b) Ask another volunteer to pick the word to label the corresponding picture. Teacher will asist the same way as above.

c. Children can refer to the life-cycle chart on the board, should they encounter with any problem. Continues until the cycle completes.



Conclusion Activity :

Ends the activity with a song - all children stand up and sing "Days of the Week'

  • Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
