Themes or Keywords : Texture, Torn, Recycling, Christmas

Objectives :

To introduce texture. To test/master tearing skills.

Materials :

  • Big Gulp cups (32 oz or bigger)
  • green construction paper
  • scrap construction paper
  • all purpose glue (not school glue)
  • cardboard scraps cut into stars

Introductory Questions :

  • Who invented the Christmas tree? (Martin Luther)
  • Why is the evergreen a symbol of God (because he never stops loving us)

Introductory Activity :

What is texture? It's the way something feels. Sometimes artists use texture in their art to make it look more real. Did you know there is an artist who made a briefcase out of ceramics, and the color and texture look so real that the museum had to put a cage around it to keep people from trying to pick it up!

Body :

Collect the type of soda cup that is shaped like a cone so that it will fit into a car's cup holder (you know, the ones that are top heavy and spill every time you turn left real quick).

Turn the cup upside down so that the bottom of the cup is the top of the tree. Because the cup doesn't have a pointed bottom, either crumple some green paper, and glue it to the bottom, or use the cone shaped paper cups you find at bottled water fountains.

Tear green paper with a zig-zag line, or into little triangles. Work from the bottom (rim) up to the top (cup bottom), overlapping the strips or triangles, and glueing them in place. Use a paper punch (or empty the collection tray in a 3-hole punch) and use the circles for ornaments. Cut a star from paper or cardboard, and glue it to the top.

Vocabulary Words :

  • texture

Evaluation Activity :

Covered completely--A
Some of the cup showing--B
Half done--C
One fourth done--D
Did not participate at all--F
