Themes or Keywords : Christmas, Recycling Crafts, Sewing

Objectives :

To introduce beginning sewing. To make a gift. To recycle things that would otherwise be thrown away.

Materials :

  • Old greeting cards
  • circle template
  • paper punch
  • tape
  • white glue

Introductory Questions :

  • Sewing is something everyone needs to know how to do. What things are sewn?
  • Recycling is a way of taking care of the earth.
  • A part of being a good Catholic is to be kind to other people. A gift is a way to show love.

Body :

Cut old greeting cards into circles. Glue two circles back to back, making sure that both pictures have the tops matching (not one picture up and down, and one sideways). Paper punch holes around the edge, about one inch apart. Wrap a piece of tape around one end of a piece of yarn to make a "needle". The yarn should be about one and a half times the circumferance of the circle. Use the "needle" to sew the cards together. Tie the ends in a bow. For first and second grade, use four circles. Fold each circle in half, right sides in. Take two circles, and glue one half together, back to back. Glue another half circle to the other half of one circle, and glue the last circle to the two remaining halves. This will make a 3-D ball, with one picture facing front, one facing left, one facing right and one facing back. Punch holes, and sew as before.

Conclusion Activity :

Man, I had a ball with you guys!

Vocabulary Words :

  • sewing
  • textiles
  • ornament
