Objectives :

Students will be able to identify which group has more. Students will be able to identify which group has fewer.
Students will be able to create a group of linker cubes based on the directions from the teacher.
Students will be able to create a group of linker cubes with more. Students will be able to create a group of linker cubes with fewer. Students will be able to make comparisons in cooperation with with other students.

Materials :

  • white board and markers
  • number cards
  • enough boxes of linker cubes for every two students to share

Introductory Questions :

  • How many of you have heard the words "more" and "fewer" before?
  • Who can tell me what those words mean?

Introductory Activity :

1. Teacher directs students to drawing on the board of two groups. One group is triangles and the other is circles.
2. Teacher and class count the objects together and then teacher writes the numeral under each group.
3. Teacher asks for volunteer to tell which group has more.

Body :


4. Teacher will have two groups of different numbers of students stand up.
5. Teacher and class will count the two groups. Students will tell which group has more.
6. Students from one group will sit down and then teacher will ask which group has fewer.
7. This will be repeated once more until all students have had the chance to stand up in a group.

Conclusion Activity :

8. Students will return to their seats and open their box of linker cubes.
9. Each student will make a train of linker cubes equal to the number given by the teacher.
10. Students will then be instructed to make an additional train. This train will have more linker cubes than the first.
11. The students will compare their trains with their neighbor?s trains.
12. The activity will be repeated with the teacher showing the number cards rather than saying the number of linker cubes to be in the train.
13. The activity will be repeated once more to make a train that has more and than twice to give the opportunity to make a train that has fewer.

Evaluation Activity :

Evaluation Method:
Students will be evaluated continuously throughout the instruction and activity. The teacher will ask for students to give answers to questions on the rug. After the students have been released to their seats for the linker cube activity, the teacher will circulate around the room to check for understanding. Students will also be checking with their neighbors. Teacher will adjust instruction if the students do not demonstrate an understanding of the topic.
