Objectives :

Children learn the letters of the alphabet in 26 weeks, taking a full week to complete each letter. By taking a full week the children better understand how to print the letter, what sounds it makes, and basic words that begin with the letter.

Materials :

  • old magazines, catalogs, newspapers, ect...
  • safety scissors
  • construction paper
  • hole punch
  • yarn
  • children's dictionary
  • glue or paste

Introductory Questions :

  • Ask if they know what each letter looks like.
  • Ask each to say letter outloud.

Introductory Activity :

Sing the alphabet song. Bring in alphabet cereal as a snack.

Body :

Each week work on a new letter. The first day have them practise writing it. The second day each child should learn how to pronounce it correctly. Show the children words that begin with the letter and different ways it could be pronounced. Write them largely on a chalkboard or posterboard.
The third day plan an activity that deals with the letter. Eat apples for A, catch paper fish for F, have races for R. Show the children the connection between the written letters and words and what they represent.
The forth day the children cut out pictures from magazines that begin with each letter. Have them paste their pictures around a piece of construction paper and have them write the letter in the center.
On the final day have the children show their completed work to the class and say what each picture is.


Conclusion Activity :

After the 26 weeks punch holes in every ones sheets and try them together with the yarn to create individual picture books for each child to keep.

Each child at the end could show their completed books and say their favorite picture for each letter.
