Themes or Keywords : How to identify shadows

Objectives :

-SWBAT (Students will be able to) trace a shadow.

-SWBAT identify where a shadow lies.

-SWBAT locate and place an object where the light source is in relation to their shadow.

-SWBAT discuss what things are needed in order to make a shadow.

Materials :

  • - White Paper
  • - Black Crayons
  • -Pipe Cleaners (any color)
  • - Tape

Introductory Questions :

  • What is a shadow? Does everyond have a shadow?

Introductory Activity :

-Who can tell me something they know about shadows? What happened to Peter Pan?s shadow? (I have shown then a clip previously from the movie and read the book as a read aloud)

Body :

(Note: This lesson would be done with 1 table of no more than six children at a time. During ?center time?, I would work with a table while the other students are at their centers learning independently. This lesson would take a few days to complete (1 day for each table/group).

1. Materials will be given out.

2. Students will be instructed to tape the bottom piece of the rectangle (can) in the middle of their paper, so that the rectangle (can) is perpendicular to the paper.

3. I will ask students if they can see a shadow. (They may have to turn the paper slightly)

4. Once they see a shadow, they will be asked to trace it using a black crayon.

5. Next, students will be asked to place the yellow circle (sun) on the end of a pipe cleaner with tape.

6. Students will now be asked to place the sun where it would have to be in order to make the shadow traced on their paper. Once they identify the proper location, the pipe cleaner with the sun will be taped onto their paper in an upright position. Now they will have a 3 dimensional project. They may decorate the sun if they like.

Conclusion Activity :

- Students will go home and look for things that have shadows. They will draw their observations and share them in class the next day.

Vocabulary Words :

  • light-causes shadows
  • object- needed to make shadow
  • surface- area for shadow to be seen

Evaluation Activity :

-Who can tell me what we need to make a shadow? (Students can look at their project and tell me what they see. sun, object, and surface)
