Introductory Activity :

Description: This is a game designed to help students recognize and demonstrate action words.

Goals: The students will identify action verbs.

Body :

Have students begin by "brainstorming" a list of words that show action. Come up with a list of about 30-50 words. Test the list by having the students complete the "I can_____" sentence using no other words but the ones on the board. If the sentence makes sense, the words are action words. EX: I can ?throw" I can "twirl". After you have checked the list to make sure they are all action words, split the class into two groups-the "actors" and the "guessers". Then, each actor picks a word from the board and spreads out with a rope. They should make the shape of the first letter of the word they chose from the board and then begin acting out the word next to their rope. The guessers use the 2 clues (the first letter and the actors actions) to guess which word from the list the actor chose. If the guesser gets it right, the two students change jobs.

Evaluation Activity :

The students will know they are successful if they had at least 3 turns to be actors and guessers. The students evaluate each other throughout the lesson by using encouraging phrases such as "great acting" and "close guess but try again"
